Biography[]

Nate Schierholtz is an outfielder currently playing for the Fresno Grizzlies, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. He made a good first impression in limited action with the Giants, with a .325 batting average in 40 at-bats. Schierholtz got his first major league hit on June 12, 2007 against the Toronto Blue Jays. His most notable moment while on the big league club was on June 23, 2007 at home against the New York Yankees, when he blooped a single to center field in the bottom of the 13th inning to win the game for the Giants.

High School, College, and the Minors[]

Schierholtz was born in Reno, Nevada, on February 15, 1984 but grew up in Danville, California. He attended San Ramon Valley High School, the same high school as teammate Randy Winn. Schierholtz was not heavily recruited out of high school and instead decided to play for Chabot College, a community college in Hayward, California. He played only one season for Chabot, starting at third base. He batted .400 with 72 hits, 60 RBIs, 18 home runs, and 45 runs scored that year before being drafted by the Giants in the second round (63rd overall) of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft. In 2004, he switched from third base to right field. Schierholtz excelled at each of his stops in the minor league system, en route to his call up in 2007. Nate Schierholtz continues to be one of the top outfield prospects in the Giants' farm system.

Scouting Report[]

Schierholtz is the heir apparent to the slot occupied by Barry Bonds. While his bat is not anywhere near as hot as Barry's neither is his attitude or temper. He still is big league by any standard, and the Giants put him in position primarily to give him the most immediate shot into their major league rotation. Some Giants fans believe that the club will go out and shop the position, but there is a tradition of home grown outfielders in the city by the Bay that Schierholtz is being slotted to fit, barring any unlikely meltdowns or injuries.
